The Functional Movement Screen

Options for Teams and Clubs

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is well-rounded, full-body assessment of mobility, stability, and functional strength which uses a series of seven multi-joint movements. Each movement pattern is evaluated to identify limitations and/or areas for improvement along with potential for injury, movement limitations, or exercise contraindications.

The tests that compose the Functional Movement Screen do not involve high-velocity movement or resistance loads beyond body weight. However, attemping to perform a movement in the screen perfectly may cause discomfort in some participants due to individual range-of-motion limitations. For this reason, participants should be notified that they should never move to the point of experiencing pain before beginning the Funcitonal Movement Screen. If experiencing pain is unavoidable in an attempt to complete a specific movement, a participant should record a score of zero for that specific movement.
